May has always been one of our most favorite months of the year. It seems it is a reward for a fickle March and April. Longer days, sunnier afternoons, peonies popping, cherry blossoms blooming, asparagus at the farmers market, and of course Mother’s Day. Then finally, summer is just around the corner. However, this year Mother Nature isn’t the only thing unfreezing in May -- so are our lives!
From vaccines to renewed air travel, our reemergence into the real world is simultaneously giving us a reason to celebrate and a panic attack. As our cities slowly open up, are we ready to live our best YOLO (You Only Live Once) lives or longing to stay in our socially intimate pods? Are you booking the trip you always dreamed of or have you made your home your new dream space?
Do you feel defined by what you lost or what you gained? Or in our case, both. Do you want to grab dinner at your favorite restaurant that blessedly survived or cozy up with this delicious creamy asparagus pasta on the couch with Netflix? Whether you are on Team Yes or on Team No, we are all on the same side. While we may not remember the pandemic exactly as we think we will, we can surely all agree that we are forever changed by the uncertainty that defined our last 15 months. It seems particularly fitting that May is Mental Health Awareness month. The mental stresses of pandemic life and COVID-19 infection are profound, and the value and long-term significance of self-care have never been more heralded. So, book that Van Gogh exhibit, draw that bubble bath, fix a cocktail, turn on The Most Relaxing Playlist in the World, and enjoy our favorite May reads below, curated just for you.
You deserve it.
In solidarity,
Amy & Sheila
